It's true that someone as wealthy as Athena could buy any kind and any amount of ring. However, there was no point in showing an insignificance ring with Athena smiling when looking at it sparkling. Moreover, the fact that Athena gave Nagi the empty box which the ring originally resided amplify it's important; there was no reason in giving Nagi something that has no meaning. In this case, the empty box represents Hayate, of course.
