Although we could only speculate on this... from what we have seen... at the severity of the circumstances following the 4 tails transformation, it's not to far fetched to think that it could damage naruto to point it kills him... however yamato comments on the strength of naruto's own chakra and its ability to withstand the kyuubi's.. so maybe there was a reason yondaime chose naruto... help in future 9 tail transformation maybe?

Also with kirabi who transforms into full grown hachibi.... we only see a similar peeling of the skin... but then comparing the 2 is unfair... seeing as the kyuubi's power is arguably a lot stronger.. especially if it has to be sealed last to balance the chakra's (according to itachi).... the thought that it posses the combined power of the first 8 adds to its own billings as a sinister creature... and worthy of the beast which minato paid his life to defeat...
