It's the old age issue of why people can have a whole different personality behind a computer screen...typically a much more aggressive/outgoing personality online, but less so in real life.
And it doesn't stop there, the college phenomenon where you have a "new clean slate" to be whoever you want, though often you tend to just revert to who you really are.
If anything, being more aggressive/outgoing/confident comes with age, and your beloved Leafa will be Suguha's future personality as she comes to terms with what she wants in life/who she is.
