I've had a check through the install package I based my version of MPlayer off of, and it doesn't show any external dependencies in its vanilla form.

It uses two config files in total; one plist file, and the standard mplayer unix config file...

In Library->Preferences, could you remove the file hu.mplayerhq.mplayerosx.plist and then re-run mplayer? Should take the mplayer front-end config file back to defaults.

Clear out your ~/.mplayer folder as well for good measure

Then see if the additional parameters as shown on the front page work for you...
