Well you've certainly got me there. I don't know enough about Japanese values to have an opinion on that. A quick google search, however, is kinda showing me that this isn't quite an acceptable standard in society regarless of how frequent it is:

Sure but I'm not sure how that's unfair. I suppose going to a private school does lead to better education than going to state school but I wouldn't say life is a competition so...
