Kamito is the original Ren 3 years ago who dominated the tournament (and stole the heart of many female blade dancers). But currently, there is another "Ren". That's why Kamito is confused as hell. He was the original Ren yet there is another Ren right in front of him. And while we don't know how this Ren compares to the old Kamito, this current "Ren" is undoubtedly the strongest sword dancer thus far in the tournament. Her group is thus far the undisputed favorite based on their dominance.

And one of the things the principal used to entice Kamito back into the school was that there have been signs of Rentia- his old spirit- and the return of "Ren", which is obviously not Kamito himself since he's right there with the principal.

It kind of reminds me of the "Kenshin and Shishou Makoto" relationship in many ways.
