I think the main reason they don't copy Yuri is because it'd likely end up with said character overshadowing everyone (or nearly everyone) else in the game, along with the story. Plus, if they eff him up, people would be pissed, whereas if it's someone that they don't have huge expectations for to begin with, the sting isn't as bad.
Honestly, it seems more like they're trying to establish a female friendly main character like Asbel and Jude, and then pair him up with a strong and capable female, like Milla.
