The Armour of Sand (when his sand sits on his skin) takes a lot of chakra, yeah, but the normal sand defense is automatic, and doesnt use chakra.

Truthfully, we dont know. But I would guess that opening the celestial gates wouldnt unseal the tenketsu like the power of the Kyubi did, they are somewhat different levels of power.
