But remember, she has no choice. If she brings Cosette to Montreuil-sur-Mer, she won't be able to get a job (and thus, Cosette will starve to death; the anime may have left that fact out, but the book was quite explicit about it.) Either she abandons her daughter to the Thenardiers or she gets to watch her only child die.
