Well, obviously he wasn't told his principal was related to the leader of a foreign criminal organization. He was just fulfilling his duties and acting like a man.

Willx, you are forgetting something important. The hero is always the MC, in my opinion. In a larger context, the hero is who the audience say it is. BTW, Tatsuya isn't as broken as you think. He is not completely emotionless and they are slowly returning. Furthermore, he is willing to help his friends if they need it. Consider the Nine Schools Competition. He refused to hold back in the tuning of the team's CADs so long as they were relying on him.

Did you ever read TAMNI (Index)?

“There are many different types of heroes. …There are those who aren’t told what to do and just move straight ahead following the feelings welling up within. …There are those who committed a major sin in the past and try to walk down the right path due to the anguish that sin brings them. …And there are those who were chosen by no one and possess none of the characteristics one would expect of a hero, and yet becomes a hero for that one person they care for. Each of those types is the type of person who will always stand back up when knocked to the ground.” - Aiwass

Tatsuya looks like the latter to me.
