Yeah, the thing is, the story itself(and Ryu in an interview I think) maintained that the red wasn't meant to trick anyone but to "guide Battler and the reader to the truth" which feels rather...yeah.

Spoiler for Benson Murder Case:

As soon as he said that I knew the wig was the proof that Benson saw someone close to him. So it was rather tedious to go through the entire book until near the end where they *finally* introduced to us the people he wouldn't mind being seen without a wig with.

Like it or not, Umineko was the one that trained me so that regular detective novels are not so hard any more. 8) ... wait.. that's no fun...

Yeah, the moment he said that I figured it had to be either the brother or his old pal.

The best part of the book was Vance systematically proving anyone could be the culprit then destroying his own theories just to show that he could. I loved how every minor detail amounted together in the end for a satisfying conclusion. Van Dine even managed to make Vance being a jerk make sense!

...Although he didn't really provide a reason for him being a jerk in the other 11 books.

But hey, Vance is a great detective. And watching him be a prick to Markham is always fun, especially when you have figured out the same things he did.
