depicts everyone turning into LCL...with the exception of Gendo, who has a final chat with his wife...and just passes away, a tear running down his cheek and a small smile on his lips (his body doesn't tangify).

Yeah, surprising for those who hold the movie screenplay as sacrosanct, but...well, the manga did try to portray Gendo as something more than just a stoic/heartless figure, but also someone who is actually (as Yui said in EoE right before the Eva-chomp) truly scared of human contact.
