The other two Gorgon sisters were the immortal Stheno and Euryale. Only Medusa was mortal, and Medusa was also the one that was defeated by Perseus. Just like in the myths, it was the head of Medusa which the leader of Perseus was using. Therefore, "Medusa " would've been a much better name than "Algol". Besides that:
We didn't see any (attempted) "death by decapitation", so that didn't fit. She only attacked him with her snake hair, her petrification attack, with hand-to-hand combat, and with the super-beam fired from her mouth, which he shattered. At no point did she try to chop of rip his head off.

Algol is referred to as "
the Gorgon of Perseus".
As in you know, Perseus' Gorgon? Or the Gorgon that Perseus owns?
And since they're using the
Constellation Perseus as the theme, of course they would use
Algol, the star in that constellation.
