Two points:
-I'm not sure "moeified" is the right term, since the original designs for many of the characters are also very moe.
-Sora no Woto's character designs also bare a striking resemblance to A-1 Pictures' own Kannagi. K-On! is just the best known example of that style.
I do agree that A-1 didn't preserve the original design's uniqueness though.
