I actually think he died, but resurrected himself. Just like Jesus did, he reappeared and lives with us today, still.
Furthermore, I think the message Aion was trying to give us was that, no matter how much we try, no matter the effort and thought we put into it, we cannot be saved; we are doomed anyway. And that the darkness shall enshroud us all.
