I seem to recall that scientists and science fiction writters have been talking about Europa for several decades now. I think it was only after the Voyager probes went by though, as I don't recall a lot of speculation after the Pioneer probes past Jupiter...just that they had a lot better images of the place when 2001: A Space Odyssey came out so they used Jupiter instead of Saturn for the film. By the time of 2010: Odyssey Two, Voyager probes had been to Jupiter again and the idea life on Europa had come up due to the theories of underwater vents like in the Atlantic Ocean providing heat for life under the ever cracking ice shelfs.
