It's just an excuse, in other words, to allow all the characters to love each other regardless of the fact that they're all girls. If you notice, there are heterosexual excuses for both Yasuna & Tomari to fall in love with girl type Hazumu.
Yasuna illness gives her the excuse to love girl type Hazumu because in reality, she loved boy type Hazumu…she just couldn’t see him. If you think about it, she’s not in love with Hazumu’s female body, but her male mind. Yasuna is, in my estimation, heterosexual and is in love with boy type Hazumu. She’s just using the girl type body to her convenience.
Now if Yasuna & Tomari get together….then the show takes a very interesting turn.
Of course, I could be wrong and they (the writers) could bring out some dark secret like child abuse, but I seriously doubt it. I think this show is more about change, loss and reclamation. I don't think there's hidden darkness as deep as child abuse.
