You just described half the battles in Naruto..think Zabuza/Haku; Sasuke/Obito; Kakashi/Guy . A lot of strong characters have had help at some point in the Manga. Those who don't receive help usually die...like Sarutobi.
Also, let's not forget that Mandara is not necessarily fighting alone either, he has the 10 tails and Obito. I personally think current Naruto can hold his own against Mandara, but in this Manga there are so many factors to consider...
