I also thought it was a bit strange in that episode even in the manga... but remember that immortality isn't always a good thing, you have to see your loved ones die off and there is practically no end to everything. (I think it isn't true immortality though, probably something like he will never get sick and die, but if someone whops his head off he will have to die... like the immortality in 12 Kingdoms)
Another thing is once that guy becomse known as a bringer of good crops he will have a lot of other problems on his hands... people might start coming after him and so on. He did travel around, so it's not just that area only that benefited...
The next ep, Suzuri ni sumu shiro, isn't one of my most favourites (its okay, not the worst or best) so I'm not all hyped up, but I can't wait for ep 12 and 13!
