It is just an upgraded version of Sharingan. It allows the Sharingan carrier person to use highly powerful jutsus.

Other than that, MS has never been used for anything other than those special jutsus. So, you can currently assume that activating MS means, activating one of those special jutsus. And, in a similar way, using those jutsus means activating MS.

You can assume the overly powered God of Narutoverse, Kishi, has designed Sharingan to be above anything in the Narutoverse, capable of doing any jutsu any other person can use, and any jutsu any demon can use, and any jutsu no human or demon can ever use. Yes, it is that stupidly overpowered.
