The basic idea is that the character are personification of game consoles, worshipped as goddesses - complete with churches, with Neptune (representing the never released SEGA Neptune) being the main character. Each of them has also a goddess form, in which usually their personality shifts somewhat (for good or bad depending on the characters).
The story in general it parodies games, anime, and console war (the latter being phased out in the latest game, V), with wacky characters and odd situations, in the world of Gamegyokai (JP) / Gameindustri (NA). In the first two games the focus was against piracy, represented by Magiquone (JP version) / Arfoire (localized version), a villain representing stuff like the R4 carts.
