Well, technically Kouko's situation couldn't be described by the word "love". But indeed, I imagine he surely is somewhat damaged by her craziness. On the other hand, this experience can serve as an emotional stepping stone for him. Moreover, it wasn't like Chinami explicitly rejected him. Not saying she would be interested in him, but he (riled up by Kouko) chose a horrible moment to confess, really inviting Chinami to reply with a "Don't be stupid" in that situation.
