It was mentioned in the manga went the tree when down as part of the explanation. The end of episode 113 was where the anime had the explanation. While on the island, they get protection from death, and some vague enhancements to their magic. Note, the bonuses (and therefore the minuses) only apply while they're on the island. Off the island they get neither protection from death, nor enhancements to their magic.
