there certainly seems to be some group in the background that wants things to stay the way they are, that knows a lot about the titans, and that has people just like eren. I am not too sure the female titan is his mother. I rather suspect she works for the yet unknown internal enemy. THis whole sortie was obviously a trap layed out by the scouting division leader to find out if some unknown faction wants eren dead , as indicated by him asking eren about the "true enemy" - then there were the murdered research subjects, and then there was that religious fanatic - I don't think his group is the masterminds, I think the cult is being used to further somebody elses goals. The enemy prly hides among the military police or inner powercircles we have not yet been allowed to see. Nasty cliffhanger at the end. looks like the "trap" for information backfired, prly THIS MUCH Titan activity was not anticipated.
