It's actually a lot more complicated than that, but you got parts of it right.
Yes, the barely field used to be the place where young Mai and young Yuuichi played (hence the foreshadowing in the OP in the 2006 version). Basically Mai had special powers and because of that kids in the school don't play with her. Young Yuuichi didn't think too much about it and think it's cool that she has powers and thus they befriended each other in that field, and they claimed it as their secret base. At the end of the holiday, young Yuuichi told young Mai that he will have to leave, and out of desperation to make him stay, young Mai, in her all her childish innocences, said to him that monsters are going to attack their base and that Yuuichi must stay and help her protect it. Of course Yuuichi cannot stay but he promised Mai that when he returns next holiday they will protect their base together. However, due to Ayu's accident Yuuichi never returned to town, and Mai kept going back to the field, which eventually got turned into the school, hoping that Yuuichi will return to keep their promise of fighting imaginary monsters which didn't exists. However, as Mai has special powers and her strong desire to keep the promise on-going, "monsters" ended up manifesting as a result of these factors, so she ended up fighting these monsters, created by herself unconciously, all alone, and eventually forgotten why she was there to do so.
Of course, it was not until Yuuichi remembered that it was him which caused all these and made Mai realise this by giving her the bunny ears (a gift he gave Mai back then) which woke Mai up from this terrible lonely nightmare. And of course if it wasn't for Sayuri, god knows what would've happened to Mai too....

Was this based on game materials or was it included in episode5? (I didn't watch ep5 yet)
