Finally finished reading it about an hour ago, after many an interruption, and I'd have to say I'm satisfied. It wasn't
quite as good as many have made it out to be, but I regret neither the money I spent on it nor the time it took to finish. The characters were, on the whole, a likable bunch and the soundtrack varied between 'tolerable' and great (particularly liked LeMU, the song from opening movie, the piano themes and a few others that have spoilery titles... heh.
So, the scenarios then, in the order I read them through:
Spoiler for the whole thing:
Tsugumi - My first and definitely the most memorable. I didn't like Tsugumi at first (even hated her at some points, especially in the first part of the Chami scene on the Gondola before it was revealed she knew he was still alive) but she definitely grew to become one of my favourites. The ending was so beautifully tragic though...
Sora - Similarly tragic ending, not as much of an impact but still... Takeshi really got all the luck, didn't he? She also had some of the funnier scenes (particularly her first lesson. Unfortunately, she was also guilty of going on a bit too much... especially when you switched perspectives and couldn't skip as quickly through her lengthy explanations of things. you'd. already. heard. Oh well.
You - A happy ending! I actually enjoyed this one quite a bit - You wasn't my favourite character but the Kid's "stupidity" made it quite funny to read once you got a few days in. Plus it had Sara, who I preferred by quite a margin to Coco. It worked pretty well as the third too because of the sheer amount of questions that started popping up around the middle, even though I didn't take notice of them until Coco's route. Violent poke for the Kid for the stupid 'sugar = love' analogy at the end, though.
Sara - Also worked perfectly as the fourth. I really enjoyed this one for her character and CGs, though it did show up the fact that I've seen too many erogame -> anime conversions and have developed an aversion to hearing 'onii-chan' that makes me reach immediately for the 'skip' key. Didn't find the scenario as bad as some did either, though it's certainly not my favourite (that honour still goes to Tsugumi) She's my kind of character, though, for sure.
As for
Coco... well, I'll get back to you on that one. It was without a doubt the funniest (highlights being Sara with the lettuce, the Kid's song and Takeshi being introduced to his kids) but the plot revelations seemed to get more and more ridiculous the closer it got to the end. I could tolerate most of them, and while convenient aspects such as Tsugumi, Sara and Hokuto being there at the time were 'explained', it was that explanation that bugged me the most. Yup, although I'm becoming more tolerant through post-game reading, the concept of Blick Winkel still bugs me a lot. It's not the first time writers have thrown something ridiculous to do with the 4th dimension into a story I was previously enjoying, either
Still, I have a feeling I'll grow to tolerate in time.
Do I recommend it? Sure. In many ways the journey itself was more than worthy of a recommendation, and some of the endings act as more lasting proof to the old theory that it's the tragic endings that stick with you for the longest.
