I thought Renon was supposed to be Rena from Higurashi, name dropped as a servant. It explains why the fanmade fake picture of Renon looked like a fat, older Rena. 8)
Anyways, these new characters, especially if they get their own portraits usually take up a lot of screen time. With that much screen time it makes more sense to me if they really are new detectives.
Since Ryukishi is a good writer, as opposed to say, George Lucas, he'll probably want to take us through the story through the eyes of two people investigating the situation. Rather than write a potentially boring "And then this happened.. then this.. then this... And then he screams NOOOO at the end..." Like George.
