Its not japanese (i think) but animation. Try Aeon Flux and that other Marvel-like Series that broadcasted M-TV some years ago with that green big-guy(not Hulk) with a mask and the leopard-queen and so on.
For today try Gilgamesh, yes there are many onee-chans and some daijoubous but its a nice anime at the same level as Hundred stories for me.
I also have to say like Aquillion said that Kino no tabi is something to make you think about ethics and philosophy of live.
