Not taking itself seriously would work against us not taking it seriously. Its premise is absurd, and in playing that absurdness completely straightfaced, it acknowledges how absurd it is through exaggeration. Not all forms of comedy come from a wink and a nudge - the lack of such winks and nudges can achieve an effect just as great or greater.
