Not only does it support thumbnails, it also offers several sizes of them.
I would also like to remind everybody that this is an image thread, not a place to rant about the moderation here. If there's something you wish to discuss in this regard, you are free to send me a PM.
For what is worth it, Nemu pretty much said the reason as for why we request people to use thumbnails. Putting them inside spoiler tags (direct link to images) doesn't prevent the images from loading (save Opera users), and doing otherwise slowdowns the page for a lot of people.
