@Furudanuki: Excellent points on the Shuffle! reference. Whatever we think about the actual anime... .the *manga* is very popular, and the game was very popular (popular enough that some fans are working on an english patch for it). The Sia & Nerine duo are instantly recognizable.
It does establish that Kona has unusual tastes even for a femme otaku.
All of which sort of diminishes the idea that the show is purely about product placement. I still think the main focus is on *adapting the manga* (as KyoAni does with all their adaptations - they focus on the source material). Any referential material is just icing (so far). Even the most "egregious" example (the Initial D segment) --- in the manga, they don't actually *show* her driving but you see the 'betweens' and the results.
Its a murky line between cross-marketing and just using current fad items to demonstrate someone is a fan. When someone watches this 10 years from now, they may not get the references but if it doesn't interfere with enjoying the moment, its fine.
Example of bad product placement: watch the movie "The Truman Show" ... the product placement in Truman's world is hideous.
