Death flag is not a death threats.
It's a form of expression using a visual novel terms indicating there's a character death ( especially for the focused character ). When I read the first line, I can alredy feel a shivers without knowing why. That's why I said, I can feel a death flag already.
In most fanfics and doujinshi, it's usual to use Refrain as a reason for character derailment.
Especially for those looking for an irrational moment such as going yaoi-mode to Rolo and Suzaku, or anything else involving ingnorance to the main plot.
Now, it comes curiosity.
Is Refrain really that strong ?
Until a lot of fanfics writer used that as a main plot device to ensure there's nothing wrong with character derailment?
