Spoiler for Wilhelm Grimm's Magical Robots 35 - Because Robotter is Waiting: Who the Hell Do You Think We Are?:
Gyrozetter debuts a robot piloted by a girl that kicks just as much ass as anything else. Robotics;Notes features a girl who's into robots and is, in fact, building one. And then Smile tops it off by having Yayoi in pure fangirl mode, loving a show she's outside the target demographic for and experiencing her dreams of being a hero. Yayoi and I are on the same wavelength. And I adore this episode.
The episode jumps into battle almost immediately. Miyuki can honestly say she's had the whole team inside her now. Poor Yayoi, though. She's the fangirl, but Reika's the one who can actually pilot a robot. Whatever staff worked on this episode clearly loved whatever they were doing, because it was animated like any other super robot show would be, even with the magical girl aesthetics. The Nissan Combo's deadpan expressions throughout the whole thing just added to the hilarity.
Basically, I was in the same mode as Yayoi for most of this episode. This is some fine television right here, and if Toei made an episode like this for Smile, I'm curious how much of it was to appeal to the older fanbase, or just for the young female fans themselves. Because if this episode turns even one young girl in Japan into a future fan of robots, then it will have done its job. Yayoi's a wonderful person to look up to.
Next week: Another "Akane's _____ Life" episode, this time about romance. Akane has Miyuki/Nao anyway.
