Same here, I found myself already enjoying the slice of life part of the anime without knowing the premise, and was only occasionally intrigued by what this 'karuta' they had kept mentioning is. Either that, or make the game-playing so flashy and over-the-top that I don't care about the rules anymore, and I begin to like it for more or less the same reason I like pro wrestling.
But yeah, the slice of life material is definitely top notch in this show, and I hope that will be focused on a lot through out the anime.
