Why do i have feeling that he's conspiring to overpower the king and eventually take over the position of King himself?

Really? It actually felt pretty well paced to me, if he isn't dead by the end of vol 3 the stuff in vol 4 won't be able to happen, it actually seem to be a quite reasonable speed to me due to Roland is not actually being the "main antagonist" in the series and he will need to die in order for events to move along. I mean for plot development-wise he will NEED to die for the story to move.
