Getting out of hand is nothing new - the MLP fandom is as crazy as the Touhou and MadoMagi ones.
Not that anyone's OBLIGED to belong there - if the show itself doesn't hook you, maybe it's just not your cup of tea. I've yet to hear of something liked by EVERYONE in the world.
