Isshin was unconscious and facing the other direction (at least in the anime - it's not shown in the manga), and Matsumoto was consumed with grief (and hence distracted) - Kubo may try to use this as a way of getting round it if he forgot they were in such close proximity (although it may all be part of one great big loose end tier
) - not saying it would be the best excuse, but it could potentially work
