A rational excuse for taking it down might have been that it was unrated software and Amazon doesn't do unrated software or movies either? Just getting the feeling that it being software, they were reacting inconsistently.

Well, first of all.... flims and books with gratuitous rape and violence is watched and enjoyed by the viewers as an audience. Games like Raplay is a little diffrent than those. It's not the explicity of the content in itself, but the fact that you take initiative to control your character to simulate raping someone. There is a diffrence between passive and active experience, so it's understandable for retailers to separate the two.
