Screenshots of MPlayer OSX (CVS 20060519) with latest ASS/SSA patch applied:

The patch supports fonts embedded in MKV containers and font matching via fontconfig.

I don't know if it is feature-complete with regards to the ASS/SSA specification. The tags that are actually read and processed (straight from the patch file) are:

Apparently the patch is being reviewed but won't be included in the upcoming pre8 release (this is what I got from the developer's mailing list). Well, the compilation was pretty straightforward on my Intel iMac (read: so easy that even I managed). Then I downloaded the official build and replaced the mplayer binary with my own. The result can be seen in the screenshots above.
