Delhi bus rape sparks national outrage

Delhi (Dec 18, Tue): An uproar has erupted in India's Parliament over the gang rape on Sunday of a 23-year-old medical student on a city bus in the capital, Delhi.
Police said they have arrested four people, including the bus driver, and are looking for two more people.
The woman and her male friend boarded the bus on Sunday and were making their way back after watching a film in a mall in south Delhi.
The six other people on board allegedly harassed the woman for being out with a man at night. When her friend protested, they began beating him with iron rods, and then raped the woman repeatedly.
Doctors said there are blunt-force injuries on the woman's face and abdomen. They added that the iron rod used to beat her has caused irreparable damage to her abdomen. She is conscious now and is communicating with the hospital staff by scribbling.
The doctors said the next 48 hours are critical and described the injuries to her intestines and private parts as "extremely serious".
Delhi's rape figures are far higher than those of other comparable Indian cities, correspondents say. According to official statistics, 572 rapes were reported in Delhi last year. The police say they have registered 635 rape cases this year. The population of Delhi was about 16.3 million last year.
