Change your uncertainty on the nuclear option to knowing for sure it isn't a good idea. Even assuming that every country concentrates its firepower on a large incoming asteroid or comet coupled with the absurdity of having enough ballistic strength to actually destroy the object, I heard it would only end up changing a single giant threat into numerous deadly projectiles. And this is
before the effects of using a nuclear weapon is added; the smaller rocks left in the aftermath of an atomic strike is now laced with radiation and still plummeting toward the Earth.
