You do not always need a border, smart one, it is not vital. Most borders are just there to contribute to the stock/bg, others are their because it's a trend or teh GFXer has run out of ideas and decides to use the Stroke tool to put some bland border. Also, the image is from Final Fantasy. The BG is just filters, gradients, brushes, and clone tool.

Your new singatue is simple, however, you've got beautiful font and that feather effect is nice. The stock could better, though. 8/1o
