Ever wondered on the purpose of Inko-chan in the show? The big clue is that it had trouble saying its own name. In a sense the bird symbolizes how the characters are forming their identities in the show. When Inko-chan finally managed to mention his name, it was at graduation time, when everyone had more or less had known their identity and figured out what to do with their lives.
I don't think this applies in the novel, but then again there was still senior year for the characters there.
