That whole development proved that Ai did develop some real feelings for him during their time together. She wouldn't have reached out to him otherwise.
And yes, props to him for not holding a grudge. But Ai deserves partial credit for actually making that call and giving him a fair shot this time. That scene was probably one of my favorites.
