The first column are the novel illustrations. They are not meant to be reproduced faithfully on a large scale as manga and anime designs have to be. As such, they can afford to be highly elaborate in the details. The anime and the first manga column do a reasonable job of approximating the novel designs.
To me, the second column looks quite sloppy and uninspired, but to each his own.
