Here's my two cents; You should pick a series that would get an Anime adaptation, that way you can be sure there will be people interested. If it already has an Anime, then it's better to narrow it down to the ones that would have a better chance at a sequel. I don't think you should work on something that is already finished, because the interest of it wouldn't feel as... You know- you're not going to have many discussions about it because people don't speculate about a dead series.
Alternatively, you can wait till next year and see who made it onto the list of 2012's Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi!
P.S - Or you could sell your soul and work on Horizon
It'll only kill you a little bit...
