Spoiler for story spoilers:
Anyways, for the spoiler summaries!
Spoiler for Magic Basics:
Magic Schools – There are 9 magic high schools present in Japan. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Schools accepted 200 students while the remainder accepted 100. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Schools had an education curriculum superior to the remaining schools and were divided into Course 1 (Nicknamed Blooms) and Course 2 (Nicknamed Weeds). Though the curriculum remained the same between courses, instructors were only present for those in Course 1, making Course 2 students act more as self-study students. Since the schools are heavily talent-oriented, there is a general discrimination held for Course 2 students.
10 Families – The 10 families are the most powerful magic families in Japan and the true power in the nation. Each family holds a number within their name and, due to hereditary factors, typically houses powerful magicians.
CAD – Casting Assistant Device. The basic pathway for magic-processing is collection of the Variables (i.e. location, velocity, weight...), collection of the Equation (i.e. Incantations), Solving of the Equation (Using the Variables to guide the Equation), and Activation of the magic. A CAD is a device which acts to augment a magic technician's ability by essentially eliminating the Solving of the Equation. A technician learns the magic Equation beforehand and inputs it into the CAD. The technician then inputs the Variables into the CAD, allowing the CAD to Solve the Equation and Activate the magic. Though it is possible to cast magic without the use of a CAD, a CAD can cut down magic processing time from minutes to fractions of a second and, as such, is commonly used amongst magic technicians.
4 System/8 Type Magic – The basic categorization of modern magic. Magic that falls under one of the 4 systems (Speed/Weight Alteration, Movement/Vibration, Convergence/Dissipation, or Absorption/Release) is considered to be Systematic Magic. Magic that acts on matter but does not follow the systems is considered Non-Systematic Magic. Magic that manipulates non-physical objects (Mind Control, Spirit Manipulation) is considered Outer-System Magic.
Psions/Pushions – Psions are non-matter-based particles released by thoughts, and Pushions are non-matter based particles released by emotions. They are the basis of modern magic. Because Psions are more commonly understood, the majority of magic is based on Psion release and use.
Basic Code – Magic Theory states that magic consists of 8 attributes (Pressure, Volume, Velocity...), each of which can be increased or decreased. All modern magic is said to be some combination of these 16 processes, termed “Basic Codes.”
Spoiler for Characters:
Protagonists
Shiba Tatsuya - 1st Year Student in Course 2 (Reserve Course, Weeds) and protagonist of the story. He specializes in regeneration magic and decomposition magic. His regeneration ability allows him to quickly heal any injury consciously, and should an injury be severe enough, will automatically heal himself regardless of will. His decomposition magic allows him to destroy any types of magic and matter. His decomposition magic comes in multiple forms, but due to their destructive ability, it is restricted by the military. He also has another ability of currently unknown origin, which is the ability to perceive magic pathways, which allows him to read magic that have recently been used, detecting people nearby, and reading the activation of magic. He uses this to his advantage by either sending out Psion waves (via his CAD) to block magic or his decomposition magic to destroy a magic before it has come to formation.
Tatsuya is a student of Kokone Yakumo, a ninjutsu instructor considered amongst the world's best, and a highly skilled close-combat fighter. He is also a member of the 101st Squadron, a secret military group which tests new equipment, intel manipulation, and covert operations.
He is a member of the “4” clan, the Yotsubas, and guardian of his sister, the candidate to be the next family heir. His primary magic ability is regeneration; as a specialized magician, though, he was unable to perform normal magic. Due to this, he was deemed a failure and was experimented by the clan leader, Yotsuba Maya, at a young age. Using her magic, she removed a portion of his mind which controls strong emotions and replaced it with a magic-processing device. This allows him to use simple magics without the use of a CAD, but due to his magic specialization, he still has difficulty performing more complex spells. Because he is a powerful magical technician, a gifted magical engineer, and relatively emotionless, the entire family fears him. The family keeps him in check by using Miyuki as a make-shift hostage via treating her as the next clan-leader candidate.
Tatsuya is the son of the president of FLT (Foa Libs Technology), the company behind the most advanced CAD devices available on the market. Due to his naturally superior intellect, he is used by his father as the leader of CAD research. Tatsuya releases his discoveries under the name “Silver” and is the engineer in charge of the softward behind the “Silver Taurus” series of CAD.
Shiba Miyuki - 1st Year Student in Course 1 (Blooms) and Tatsuya's sister. She is considered one of the top 3 magicians amongst the 1st years and probable heir to the Yotsuba family. She is extremely devoted to Tatsuya, as he saved her from some currently unexplained incident a few years prior to the start of the story. Unlike her brother, she can use all forms of magic, her specialty being ice. The true extent of her abilities is currently unknown. Like her brother, she is also a member of the 101st Squadron.
Friends
Mitsui Honoka - 1st Year Student in Course 1 and Miyuki's friend. She is considered one of the top 3 magicians amongst the 1st years. She specializes in light-based magic.
Kitayama Shizuku - 1st Year Student in Course 1 and Miyuki's friend. She is considered one of the top 3 magicians amongst the 1st years.
Saijou Leonheart - 1st Year Student in Course 2 and Tatsuya's friend.
Chiba Erika - 1st Year Student in Course 2 and Tatsuya's friend. Her family trains soldiers.
Shibata Mizuki - 1st Year Student in Course 2 and Tatsuya's friend. Her eyes allow her to see Pushions and Psions.
Yoshida Mikihiko - 1st Year Student in Course 2 and Tatsuya's friend. He is Mizuki's childhood friend. He specializes in Spirit Magic, a Pushion-based ancient magic.
Student Committees
Nakajou Azusa - 2nd Year Student council member and CAD Engineer. She is very shy and has an intense interest in CADs.
Juumonji Katsuto - 3rd Year Student council member and head of the club management committee. He is one of the three strongest magicians in 1st School and next heir to the “10” family. He specializes in barrier-type magic.
Watanabe Mari - 3rd Year Student council member and head of the public morals committee. She is one of the three strongest magicians in 1st School.
Saegusa Mayumi - 3rd Year Student council President. She is one of the three strongest magicians in 1st School and next heir to the “7” family. She specializes in fast, accurate magic.
Hattori Gyoubushoujou Hanzo - 2nd Year Student council Vice-President. He ranks 4th or 5th in terms of ability in 1st School. Despite this, he was defeated by Tatsuya in a duel.
3rd School
Ichijou Masaki - 1st Year Student known as the “Crimson Prince.” His abilities are on par with or above the Big Three of 1st School, and he is known to have experience on the front-lines of war. He is the next heir to the “1” family and specializes in an Explosive type magic which vaporizes anything composed of water. He is restricted by the military due to his powerful abilities.
Kichijouji Shinkurou - 1st Year Student known as the “Cardinal.” He is considered a genius due to his discovery of one of the “Basic Codes” at the age of 12. Because of his knowledge of a “Basic Code,” his magic is much more quickly activated and precise than a normal magic technician's.
Minor Characters
Kirihara Takeaki - 2nd Year Student and representative for the 9-schools competition.
Kokonoe Yakumo – Tatsuya's Taijutsu Master. He is considered one of the greatest hand-to-hand specialists in the world.
Kazama Harunobu – Tatsuya's Superior officer in the 101st Squadron. He is considered Kokonoe's best pupil..
Sanada Shigeru – An officer in the 101st Squadron..
Yanagi Muraji – An officer in the 101st Squadron.
Yamanaka Kousuke – An officer in the 101st Squadron.
Fujibayashi Kyouko – An officer in the 101st Squadron.
Ono Haruka – Tatsuya's subordinate and counselor in charge of the 1st Years at 1st School. She does not know of Tatsuya's identity until he reveals it to her. She also has trained under Kokonoe Yakumo.
Kudou Retsu – A retired and well-respected adviser to the country's Magic Defense Force.
Spoiler for Deciding the Members:
Following the terrorist incident at the end of the first arc, a meeting is held to decide who is to participate in the 9-schools competition as representatives and engineers. Tatsuya wanted to avoid joining since he felt it was a hassle, but Azusa nominates him as a technician while the Student Council is having lunch together.. She vaguely learned of his skill as a technician when she checked Miyuki's CAD, which was tuned by Tatsuya. Tatsuya tries to talk his way out of it, but because Miyuki wanted him to take care of her CAD during the competition, he could no longer refuse and took on the task.
Before he could officially join, however, he would have to clear it with all the other engineers and representatives, especially because he is a 1st year as well as a weed. During the meeting, there was a lot of arguing; however, it is solved when Juumonji put forth a simple test to test Tatsuya's skills. Tatsuya was to take a student's normal CAD and tune the competition CAD to allow the student to use it.
Kirihara Takeaki is chosen to have his CAD tuned by Tatsuya. Due to the difference in model between Kirihara's normal CAD and the competition CAD, Tatsuya states that a direct copy of the settings is not recommended, a point conceded by the other present technicians. Tatsuya proceeds to tune the new CAD manually, inputting all the appropriate values and changing them where necessary, a technique which is beyond the skill of any technician present at the meeting. When completed, Kirihara states that the competition CAD feels no different than his typical CAD.
Azusa strongly recommends adding Tatsuya to the Engineering team after seeing his skill but is met with complaints from the other representatives. They argued that despite all his advanced techniques, there was no improvement in the CAD. At this point, Hattori steps in and supports him, telling the other Student council members that making an average-spec CAD feel the same as Kirihara's high-spec CAD is an accomplishment. With that, Tatsuya became the only 1st year and weed to ever join the Engineering team.
Despite becoming a part of the engineering team, the 2nd and 3rd year representatives did not feel comfortable having Tatsuya adjust their CAD. The 1st year male representatives dislike him and were also against him tuning their CADs. As such, the 1st year female representatives were to work with him. Despite not wanting to bare themselves to a boy of the same age, they agreed once Miyuki, Honoka, and Shizuku had him tune their CADs
During all these events, Tatsuya receives a call from Kazama alerting him to the actions of a criminal syndicate which has been operating in the area where the games would take place.
Spoiler for Before the Competition:
When going to the competition grounds, the representatives and engineers travel separately, much to Miyuki's distress. During the trip, a car from the opposing traffic had a sudden flat tire, drove towards them, and managed to pass over the median while bursting in flames. Many students, in a panic, cast magic to stop the car; however, since multiple spells were cast on the same object, none had an effect and served to make it difficult to cast another spell on top of it. Mari called for Juumonji to try and overwrite the magic, but it was something he couldn't do. Instead, Miyuki offered to put out the flames while Juumonji focused on protecting the bus. Mari did not believe a 1st year could handle overwrite all the magic, but the moment she thinks that, all the magic placed on the car was blown away. Miyuki in the meanwhile uses her ice magic to stop the flames while Juumonji places a barrier around the bus.
Mari was both surprised and afraid of what had happened, since removing all the magic placed on the car would be extremely difficult, even for Mayumi. She compared Mayumi's ability to remove the magic as a gun she could shoot to cancel a spell while what happened would be akin to carpet bombing an area to remove everything. Seeing how Miyuki knew about it, Mari suspected it was Tatsuya who had removed all the magic but did not inquire any further.
As Tatsuya approached the bus, he noticed traces of magic used by the bus driver who used magic a few times in order to try and crash the burning car into the bus. At this point, it is revealed that Tatsuya has an ability to read magic.
The group reaches the military-owned hotel and meet Erika, Mitsuki, Leo, and Mikihiko who came as spectators. Erika had used connections from her family, who trains soldiers, to get part time jobs and rooms in the hotel. At night, Tatsuya patrols the hotel since he was alerted to the possible presence of criminals. The criminals came to attack and, as Tatsuya moved to intercept them, met with Mikihiko who was also trying to stop them. Mikihiko attempted to use his magic but because it was taking a long time to activate, Tatsuya was forced to destroy the criminals' weapons. Once all the criminals were stopped, Tatsuya told Mikihiko to find someone to arrest them. Kazama showed up shortly after Mikihiko left and took care of everything.
Afterwards, Tatsuya talks to Mikihiko about his magic, saying it was taking too long to cast because the magic itself was defective and it was not Mikihiko's fault. Because Mikihiko's magic was an ancient and well respected “Spirit Magic,” he became angry and held some animostiy towards Tatsuya.
Spoiler for 1st Years Competition Part 1:
Speed Shooting (8/6) – Shizuku was the representative Tatsuya was in charge of helping. Tatsuya noticed that she had a lot of power in her magic but lacked the precision necessary for the event. To overcome this weakness, he created a new magic and put it into her CAD. The magic was a wide-area magic which, when activated, covered the competition grounds and allowed her to destroy the disks without worrying about her accuracy problems. For the second part, which requires accuracy, he merged Shizuku's normal CAD with a Gun-type CAD, allowing her to use the gun itself to increase her accuracy while still utilizing her typical magic. Up until this point, this was rarely done since the only successful cases were still riddled with problems; however, due to his superior abilities, he managed to perfectly merge the two types of CAD. At the end of this competition, the magic he created was to be added to an index of magic, but Tatsuya declined and had Shizuku put it under her name using the excuse that he couldn't perform the magic quickly enough and would be ashamed if he were to be asked to use it. 1st School took the top 3 places in this event. It was implied that Tatsuya had managed to help with the other girls' CAD tuning, but he only officially tuned Shizuku's CAD.
Crowd Ball (8/7) – Tatsuya had no hand in this competition at all, and in this event, 1st school did poorly.
Battle Board (8/6, 8/8) – Honoka was the representative for this event. Tatsuya had no direct influence on this competition, but he gave her advise none-the-less. Honoka specialized in light magic and not movement. Taking advantage of the rules, stating that magic cannot be used against other contestants directly, he tells Honoka to direct her light magic to water present in the course to blind the other contestants. Sunglasses are used during the later rounds to block this; however, due to the decreased visibility, it was more difficult to navigate the course. Tatsuya teaches Honoka the course, which allows her to handle any possible decrease in visibility.
Ice Pillars Break (8/7-8/8) – Miyuki, Shizuku, and Honoka were representatives for this event. Miyuki's ability to use A-class magic (Inferno, a fire type magic, and Nirfeim, an ice type magic) and Shizuku and Honoka's utilization of techniques taught to them by Tatsuya, allowed the three girls managed to take the top 3 spots, with Shizuku and Miyuki fighting in the finals. Shizuku used a microwave-type A-class magic installed into her CAD by Tatsuya as well as using CADs to cast 2 spells at once to surprise Miyuki; however, because Miyuku already knew how to use 2 spells at once already, she managed to win. Miyuki, throughout the competition only had one pillar melted, which was done by Shizuku.
Mirage Bat (8/9) – Tatsuya simplified the magic needed to make the girls float throughout the arena. Due to this, the 1st school representatives were moving through the air before any of the other representatives even took off. During this competition, a spectator who was recording magic commented that the ability to minimize a spell to that extent while still maintaining its ability to handle complicated movements was something only Taurus Silver's ability. At this point, Azusa puts all of Tatsuya's contributions as an engineer (Installing 3 A-class magics which are not typically open to the public, Manually adjusting CAD systems, Joining 2 incompatible CAD models, Creating new magic, and Simplifying magic) as well a conversation she had with Tatsuya in the past (where he remarked that Taurus Silver might be a Japanese person their age) together and begins to believe that Tatsuya might be Silver.
Spoiler for 1st Years Competition Part 2:
After the finals for Mirage Bat were completed, the 1st Year girls were all celebrating their victories. At this point in time, the 1st Year girls had taken the top 3 spots for Speed Shooting and Ice Pillar Break, the top spot for Battle Board, and the top spots for Mirage Bat. Crowd Ball, which Tatsuya was not involved with, did not fare so well. The 1st Year Boys had the complete opposite results and were dominated by 3rd School's Masaki and Shinkurou. Due to Tatsuya's abilities and the fact that he is surrounded by girls, he is hated by all of the 1st year Blooms.
During the celebration, Tatsuya is called by the Student Council. When he arrives, Tatsuya discovers that many of 1st School's representatives were injured, including the three from the Monolith Code event and Mari. Tatsuya suspects someone from the Committee in charge of the competition altered a representative's CAD such that it overloaded and exploded to injure 1st School's representatives. He also suspects this is related to the recent criminal activities which have been perpetrated towards 1st School. It is revealed that the Criminals will lose a lot of money if 1st School wins.
The Student council, having witnessed his overwhelming abilities (his ability as a magician displayed during the previous arc, not his abilities as an engineer), wished to have him take a role in the Monolith Code Finals Tournament. Tatsuya wishes to reject the offer because, not only is he attempting to keep a low profile (and failing miserably by this point), he is a 1st year, weed, and engineer. Despite knowing his abilities, the Student council as a whole did not know how to respond until Juumonji strong-arms him into taking the role, allowing him free reign to pick his partners. Tatsuya picks Leo and Mikihiko instead of representatives, using the excuse that he knows their magic well enough to be able to tune their CADs before the competition as well as knowing it well enough to be able to work together with them.
Tatsuya drags Leo and Mikihiko out to join him in the Monolith Code competition. He spends an hour customizing a CAD to give it a sword-form for Leo. The competition does not allow for physical contact, so the sword was designed to separate into two portions. The CAD would act like a normal sword, but the tip would be connected by magic, which would make it legal under the rules of the match. Leo's role would be to prevent the opponents from moving within 10 meters of the Monolith, Prevent the destruction of the Monolith, and should the Monolith be weakened, Protect the Code at all costs.
Mikihiko, after much thought, entrusts Tatsuya with his CAD, which contains every magic spell he can use. Tatsuya explains that Mikihiko's role will be one of stealth, since the ancient-type Spirit Magic Mikihiko uses is slower to activate but much more subtle and stronger than modern magic. He also confirms that Mikihiko can use a spell which would allow their senses to overlap. To modify Mikihiko's CAD, he completely rewrites the CAD code to eliminate all redundant magic so as to improve the efficiency as well as translating the Ancient-type code to a more Modern code to further improve it. Witnessing this, Azusa becomes completely convinced that Tatsuya is Silver.
Monolith Code (8/10)
1st School – Match 1
The opponents use magic to attack Tatsuya, Leo, and Mikihiko, but Tatsuya uses his own to blow the magic away. Because of this, both Mayumi and Mari have confirmed that Tatsuya was the one who saved the bus during the earlier accident. Leo attacks with his long distance sword, and Tatsuya attacks with his two Gun-type CADs. Due to the low quality of the CADs, he does not get the same impact he did when he fought with Hattori, but by tricking his opponent, he got in close and shot the opponent from behind and retrieved the Code.
1st School – Match 2
This match took place in a building. Tatsuya had Mikihiko place some “Spirits” on his person and snuck into the enemy base. Once inside, he activated Mikihiko's magic and, using that, had Mikihiko find the Code.
1st School – Match 3
This match took place in an area with water. Taking advantage of that, Mikihiko used a spell to create a thick mist. Using this as cover, Tatsuya infiltrated the enemy base and found the code.
3rd School – Match 3
Seeing Tatsuya as a threat, Masaki and Shinkurou devise a plan to call Tatsuya out in the finals. Shinkurou had seen the overwhelming results of the Speed Shooting due to Tatsuya's ability as an Engineer. Because of this, he knew that any CAD tuned by Tatsuya would be equivalent to a 2-3 generation cap in ability. Seeing how Tatsuya won the first 3 Monolith Code matches and knowing his ability as an engineer, Shinkurou believed that only Tatsuya's tactics and Degeneration magic were a threat. He decided to send a direct challenge out to him by having Masaki fight against all three of their opponents by themselves, since he believe that Tatsuya would not be able to win in a direct confrontation with Masaki despite his strength in the previous matches. To fight against his opponents, Masaki uses magic to form a tube and uses his explosion magic within it. Using the tube, he directionalized the shockwave to knock out all his opponents.
Due to all the accidents occurring, Tatsuya reveals who he is to Haruka and asks her to research the location of the “Headless Dragon” crime syndicate, the group of criminals who he believes is involved in the attacks on 1st School's students, explaining that he wishes to calm his mind and to have some insurance in case he would need to attack their base. He also asks her to bring him a mantle and a coat with magic circles embedded within to boost a magician's ability. Though the student council was unsure as to the legality of such items, he was able to use them due to a loophole in the rules.
Mayumi was worried about Tatsuya's well-being, since he more than fulfilled his duty by bringing them to the semi-finals and gathering enough points to have the school win the 1st Years competition and for those reasons, he intended to go through the competition without getting injured so as to hide his self-healing ability; however, Miyuki approached him as he was leaving saying she believes he will win despite his military restrictions and restrictions due to Miyuki (No details, but I believe she's restricting his abilities based solely on the fact that she is acting as a hostage for the family), which meant he could no longer lose.
Match 4 - 1st School v. 3rd School
When the final match started, Leo and Mikihiko wore the coat and the mantle. Neither the crowd nor Tatsuya's friends were sure how the clothes work, but using her eyes, Mitsuki saw many spirits gathering around Mikihiko. As the match began, all the spectators were surprised as Tatsuya, using his Degeneration-based magic and his gun CAD, and Masaki, using his Cylinder magic and Explosion magic, were fighting and approaching each other from their home bases, something typically difficult to do except with the use of long-range magic. Despite having 2 gun CADs, Tatsuya was using only 1 as his other had a sound-based magic installed.
Everyone viewing the fight were amazed. Many VIPs, including Kudou Retsu, a former advisor for the country's magic defense department, came to see the match specifically because of Tatsuya's abilities, and Shinkurou was amazed because, despite being alerted to his participation in the event at 9 the evening before, he had time to tune his teammates CADs, tune both his CADs, and change the magic in one of them. Most magicians were amazed at the sight because the collision of magic looked much like a fireworks show and because the magic being used was impossible to use for most magicians, and for those who could, were typically limited to 1 shot a day.
As they fired off their magic, the two approached each other. As Tatsuya got closer to Masaki, it became more difficult for him to cancel the magic before it activated, so he was forced to dodge with his body as well. As this was happening, Shinkurou managed to sneak into 1st School's area and was fighting with Mikihiko and Leo. Shinkurou managed to knock down Leo, but in doing so, was left open to attack by Mikihiko. Mikihiko was suppressed by Masaki, which left Masaki open for a small moment. Using that moment, Tatsuya closed the distance and started to take the fight into close combat. Masaki, feeling an overwhelming fear due to Tatsuya's presence, paniced and released his magic 16 times, each one with power above what was allowed by the rules and enough to take the magic energy a typical magician could gather in an entire day. Tatsuya erased 14 of them and was hit by 2 of them. Masaki hesitated because he used a spell too powerful for the competition, but in that moment, Tatsuya's auto-healing ability kicked in, healing broken bones and potentially severe blood loss, before Tatsuya noticed he had been knocked out. Using Masaki's hesitation, Tatsuya closed in and feinted a punch which Masaki dodged on instinct. Using the opening, Tatsuya snapped his fingers and created a massive sound wave heard throughout the arena. Masaki fell unconscious while Tatsuya fell to his knees.
The pressure holding Mikihiko to the ground suddenly lifted, when he noticed Masaki lying on the ground. Though he believed Tatsuya could have beaten Masaki, he was still unsure. Shinkurou, hardly believing his eyes that Masaki had been defeated 1 on 1 in a direct confrontation, let his guard down for a moment. Because Mikihiko didn't want the victory be purely because of Tatsuya, he took advantage of that opening and disappeared with an illusion magic. By the time his illusion was deactivated, he had prepared 5 spells with which to defeat Shinkurou. Once doing so, though, he was attacked by 3rd School's final team member, and before he was defeated, Leo attacked with his long sword, ending the match.
With the timing, Tatsuya joked that Leo took the spotlight by timing his attack, though Leo confessed that Tatsuya's attack had affected him, making him feel as he did when he was in an accident years ago. From this conversation, Mikihiko noticed that what he lacked most at the moment was physical toughness, not magic.
Spoiler for After the Match:
Upon seeing Tatsuya getting hit by 2 of Masaki's attacks which held strength above what was allowed, Mayumi began to panic and ask what had happened. Though unsure himself, Juumonji explained that it was likely an ancient-type magic that dispersed the damage throughout his body, since Tatsuya was able to move around properly afterwards. Though she calmed down, Mayumi was unsatisfied with the explanation.
In the spectators' seats, 2 of Tatsuya's military squadron, a doctor and a female similar in age to Haruka, were watching over the match to ensure he would not reveal his secret magic in public. They had noticed that he used his self-healing magic since it was activated unconsciously as well as his “Flash Cast” ability once, which was camouflaged thanks to his one CAD having sound-based magic installed. They also discussed what would happen had he used restricted magic openly, saying he would have to be “protected” (restricting his freedom), which could lead to a conflict. They were grateful it did not happen, though, since only one other member in their squadron could match his casting speed.
Tatsuya went to receive medical treatment for his eardrum but learned it would take some time for it to heal. Once he reached his room, however, he activated his self-healing and left the bandages on so he could pretend he was still injured so as to have a break from everything.
Spoiler for All Grades Mirage Bat Part 1:
Because of Tatsuya's victory, his team won the points for the 1st Years competition as well as 1st place for Monolith code, widening the lead 1st School had over 3rd School, which was in second place. The Headless Dragon syndicate became desperate since 1st School was very likely to win; Because of this, they decided to use any number of methods to prevent their victor.
Mirage Bat Round 1(8/11)
Miyuki was participating in place of Mari for the Fairy Dance, a nickname for the Mirage Bat event due to the contestants wearing fairy costumes, due to Mari's injury. Her match was the second of the day, and so she decided to watch the match with Tatsuya. During the match, 1st School was doing well, but suddenly, the representative's magic stopped working while the girl was in midair. Though she was physically safe, the fear she held forced her out of the competition, and possibly would prevent her from using magic again due to psychological trauma.
Tatsuya shortly received a call from Mikihiko. Mitsuki, feeling guilty about not helping during previous accidents, decided to remove her glasses with Mikihiko using magic to reduce the strain on her eyes. When the girl fell, Mitsuki noticed a small spark from the CAD. Since neither Tatsuya nor Mikihiko felt anything, it was likely due to an equipment failure. After complimenting Mitsuki, Tatsuya headed towards where equipment was inspected while Miyuki was preparing for her turn.
Tatsuya picked up Miyuki's CAD, which was checked by tournament staff to ensure a CAD falls within regulations, and noticed a problem with it as soon as he picked it up. Realizing it was tampered with, he grabbed the staff member who had given him the CAD and pinned him down. As the security staff approached, he mentioned to the restrained staff member that he noticed the CAD was tampered with. With a large killing intent which held the security staff at bay, Tatsuya threatened the man with a knife-hand stance. Despite thinking that Tatsuya might kill the man, they could not move out of fear from his killing intent.
Kudou suddenly entered the room, asking about the situation at hand. Tatsuya, who respected Kudou, let his killing intent vanish and apologized for the scene he was causing. He proceeded to explain that the staff member had tampered with Miyuki's CAD and that he was interrogating him. As a security staff member was attempting to grab Tatsuya, another who had been close enough to hear what Tatsuya said prevented it. Kudou took the CAD and inspected it, learning that something similar had occurred in war which resulted in the deaths of many of his comrades. A virus which intercepted the signals between the CAD and magician, preventing magic activation all together, was implanted. He inquired as to whether Tatsuya was aware of such a thing, to which Tatsuya responded that he did not know of it, but was only aware that something had changed in the CAD he had tuned.
After security had captured the suspect, Kudou reprimanded the tournament director for allowing a criminal to sneak in amongst the staff and got permission for Miyuki to use a CAD that had been used before and was guaranteed not to malfunction. Congratulating Tatsuya on his victory and hoping for another meeting with him, Kudou sent Tatsuya on his way to watch the match.
Spoiler for "All-Grades Mirage Bat Part 2:
Mirage Bat Round 2 (8/11)
When Tatsuya returned to his school tent, everyone looked at him with wariness, since Mayumi had received notice that he had used violence against a staff member. Miyuki, crying and blaming herself, explained that he only became angry when it came to matters dealing with her. Getting a general grasp of the situation, Mayumi diffused the situation.
The second round of Mirage Bat was beginning with Miyuki taking the place of the injured Mari in the All-Grades competition. Though she was on par with the other representatives, due to her inexperience in the event, she was put in disadvantageous situations, forcing her to lose points. During a half-time break, Miyuki asked Tatsuya if she could use a tool Tatsuya originally wanted to save for the Finals. Seeing her determination to win, he allowed her to use it.
During the second half of the round, she took the tool, a single switch CAD, and jumped into the air; however, instead of needing to go down to the ground, she remained in the sky. The crowd was surprised to see the Flight CAD created by Taurus Silver only a month ago being used. Since it was a device not available to the public, she overwhelmed all opposition and won. Afterwards, the CAD was confiscated so the tournament staff could “check” to make sure it fit regulations.
Azusa had become depressed and fearful upon hearing the news of Tatsuya using violence, since she knew he was a person who would not hesitate to use force if he had a reason. However, when Tatsuya explained what had happened before leaving to meet with Miyuki. All the engineers present were surprised at the vents which had happened without them knowing it, especially the engineer who tuned the CAD of the girl from the first round.
All the engineers had suffered a blow to their pride, even Azusa who was the only Engineer present who knew he was Silver and knew it was pointless to compare herself to him. Though Tatsuya's scores were poor, his practical application and real-life knowledge of magic far surpassed everyone else's, and she felt the grading system had become more or less useless.
As Azusa was pondering to herself, Mayumi came in and talked to her in private, saying Azusa shouldn't compare herself to “that,” referring to Tatsuya in a crude but kind manner. Mayumi admitted that she was frustrated that Tatsuya had surpassed everyone, which surprised Azusa, who thought Mayumi would still be above Tatsuya. Though it frustrated her, Mayumi accepted how things stood and thought it would be good, since “Blooms” are often overly prideful, though they are only superior in terms of the practical exam. This surprised Azusa, as she had never heard that the Course division was based purely on that exam.
Mayumi then explains the origins of the system. In the early years of the Magic Schools, only 100 students were accepted. The government had mandated that they take another 100 students so the schools could supplement the government with more magic personel. Due to the lack of teachers, however, the curriculum was changed so that the 1st Years, the new students, were to learn theory only and the 2nd Years and above were to learn practical magic. The uniforms, too, had to be ordered in haste and as such had no school badge. As a result of these two things and a misunderstanding of the order to “Supplement” more magic personell, the Course 1/Course 2 system became what it is at the present time. The discrimination that came from attending the school was all due to a misunderstanding, which both Mayumi and Azusa thought was something Miyuki shouldn't be made aware of.
And that's everything up to the most recent spoiler. This contains information from Baka-Tsuki, Whsie and Raptorfalcon, so make sure all reps go to Whsie and Raptorfalcon.
