Well in my opinion Riki doesn't need full blown romance with the heroines,just some mild romance like having several hints that the heroines have like him/have crush on him,that's why girl would prefer reaching out and depend on him more.Having it like that could make the arc feel less forced at least.
But I guess they think having any kind of romance would overshadowed the friendship theme they want to convey so they took it out entirely.
In the end,it's just a matter of preference...
