Hmm...to be honest this scares the crap out of me as do the prospects for a 30th anniversary Macross series. Kawamori's gotten a whole lot weirder and has had a whole ton of really bad ideas for his shows even since Macross Frontier concluded so the thought of not only him supervising anything new (something I hope in vain doesn't happen), but of him supervising changes to his old stuff just makes me really uncomfortable.

Yeah though, really wary of what's in store for the 30th anniverary celebration seeing as how I've basically lost all faith in Kawamori and he's shown no signs of doing anything to restore it of late. I wait in cautious anticipation.....

As for my hopes for it, it's probably a pipe dream but I would like to see Kawamori dial back the whole pop-idol worship thing a bit (From AKB0048/Frontier levels to say Plus levels) and maybe give a touch more focus to the military/exploration aspect of the franchise without making them all totally incompetent idiots like Spacy has been since about the time of Macross 7. Also wouldn't mind seeing a love interest that isn't a pop idol this time around. The whole pop idol thing is synonomous with Macross and I get that and I think it should remain an element of it's mythos otherwise it wouldn't really be Macross anymore, but I'm not sure I entirely like how it's come to all but dominate the whole context of the franchise and how off the balance has become compared to the shows from the 80's and 90's. It just doesn't feel quite as much about a sweeping space opera of humanity exploring and fighting aliens with transforming planes while there's an idol singing in the background so much as idols performing music video like segments while humanity explores and fights aliens in the background. Not sure if I expect the punditry in this Macross forum to get what I'm saying since I know how much it adores everything Sheryl and the like, but consider it a plea from an old school fan of Macross.

Well anyway to be more specific I wouldn't mind seeing something with a little more drama like Plus either, but I doubt I'll get it from Kawamori so I'll even settle for a Macross Zero...hell as long as it's just not taken to the next level of Kawamori absurdity ala AKB0048 and Aquarion Evol I'll probably be fine in the long run.
Yeah, I'm not sure what he was thinking with Basquash or AKB0048, but Kawamori is what got me into anime in the first place and I'd gladly defend a crazed, unshaven, raving Kawamori over my own flesh and blood any day of the week (Sad, I know, but the mechanical designs of Macross, Armored Core, and Eureka Seven hold special places in my heart).

As for the pop idol/pilot relationship...I think that's become almost synonymous with "Macross" at this point and after the extreme popularity of Frontier, I don't think we're going to see it fade. I just think we should have a female pilot with a male idol as her love interest. Would be a change of pace to hear a male voice (didn't forget Basara) lending compliments to the inarticulate screams of said female pilot as she guns down/itano circus' whatever enemy we're facing this time. Cause god knows we got plenty of inarticulate screaming out of Alto. Not that I didn't like it...

And I really think that Frontier had a believable reason for having them be on the battlefield during the fights, aside from just musical highlighting and fight choreography (well, most of the time at least. Still don't understand why Ranka was on the deck in SnT when they were re-entering the frickin' atmosphere). Since we know the idol thing will continue, I just want to see what other ways we can make it related to the ongoing plot. I actually watched SnT with my girlfriend the other day and when the final battle began she wondered aloud if there wasn't a reason for them to sing in standard military garb and in the safety of some bunker if they were so necessary to the fight. She knows how much I love my mecha porn though, so she didn't press the issue too hard. I mean, there would have been no awesome dogfight extravaganza between Alto and Brera if it wasn't the direction the series was headed in.

Lastly, my wish for the next series is that Kawamori keep up his effort to make variable fighters look more realistic. I don't know what happened with some of the fighters in the series (we have some that look thin, some that look bulky, some that look organic...), but I greatly enjoy the highly detailed CG used for the VF-25 and YF-29 as well as the more realistic designs. I mean, Frontier's valkryies look like they can FLY. I just hope our VF-30, 35 or 40 or whatever its called is capable of living up to the legacy Frontier has left behind.

And no, I couldn't understand why myself.

That being said, I would argue Macross Zero brought the focus back to the military in a very positive way. Kawamori even done his research with the JSDF, which is something I can appreciate. Still, I don't think every Macross should be like that, although Macross 7 certainly overdone the idol factor...

If there is any changes I want to see in the Blu-Ray edition, I actually want more mecha porn and updated with CG graphics. This might not be everyone's cup of tea, but then again, why not add ORIGINAL REMASTER as an option?

Still, since I won't be making the changes, I guess the only thing I can do is to cross my fingers and wait for what Kawamori will bring upon us...

I think we all want more mecha porn, Tak. I watch Sayonara no Tsubasa on a weekly basis just to see more YF-29 goodness.

On topic of THE MUSICULTURE, I like the character designs for Daryl Walgria (what kind of girl is named Daryl, Japan?) and Sonia Dosel the best. Wonder if we'll get a cameo of them in a future Macross series. Though I'm sure we'll get a cameo of Sheryl first. I demand it, in fact.

So I guess this finalizes the whole issue of us getting another series, huh? Do we wait until the 35th anniversary for a VF-35 then? Or are we waiting straight until the 40th? Will Shoji Kawamori get senile or develop carpal tunnel and be unable to design more great variable fighters?!
