I used Adobe ImageReady, which is not a freeware. However, there is one month trial where it can be used for free.

Just go
here and you'll find a whole lot of avatar sets (scroll the tile menu as well). If the link doesn't work, it is in your user control panel (user cp ---> edit avatar)
